Situated near to Kleinmond, and about 5km from the famous coastal village Onrus, Hermanus is arguably the most famous seaside resort in the Overberg region. Here things get just about as good as it can get. Named after its first ever resident, Hermanus Pieters, Hermanus boasts unsoiled beaches that lay stretched all along its shoreline, fabulous weather and a haven for outdoor fanatics. Known as the breakaway capital of the Overberg, Hermanus offers the best land and boat-based whale watching in the world. Period. Every year around July, Hermanus attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world, as the town eagerly awaits the coming of its most distinguished guests − the Southern Right Whales.
There’s some excellent swimming to be had at Hermanus. And crayfish diving, as well as surfing, canoeing, yachting and fishing off the harbour walls of course. Golf lovers will favour the nearby gold course. You can even enjoy a game of tennis or squash if you like. Then there’s power boating, shark cage diving and hang-gliding for the adrenaline junkies.
But if a quiet nature excavation is more your thing, try some of the hiking routes that venture along the fynbos-covered mountains, and bird watching in the lush, scenic surrounds. Or indulge in the many interesting art and craft studios and galleries.
The bottom-line is that Hermanus has it all. And as far as accommodation, restaurants, pubs and shops are concerned – you won’t find any better than at Hermanus. The town has every amenity necessary to enjoy the ultimate breakaway. It even has its own biltong shop so you can enjoy the rugby in true South African style.
In summer the beaches are packed with visitors. In winter everybody comes here to escape the cold Northern Hemisphere and to see the whales. Hermanus is an absolute adrenaline rush and an endless source of delight to all. You can come here any time you want, but for obvious reasons, many decide to never leave. |
